Feed My Mind with Carly Taylor - Finding Stillness
When was the last time in your waking hours that you were truly still? Without your phone or computer, just being present? In today’s world of busyness and distraction, we are conditioned to be constantly active.
For many of us, stillness doesn’t come naturally, and finding time to practise stillness feels unnatural—until you feel it benefits. Through consistent practice, we can start to crave it—not as an escape, but as an integral part of our growth.
Here are 3 tips to practise stillness in your daily life:
Tip 1: Start Your Day in Stillness
One of the best ways to incorporate stillness into your life is by starting your day with a stillness. This could be meditation, deep breathing exercises, journaling or simply sitting quietly with your thoughts. Taking just a few minutes each morning to centre yourself can set a calm and focused tone for the rest of the day.
Tip 2: Get out in Nature
Spending time in nature is a really powerful way to achieve stillness. Nature has a calming effect on our minds and bodies. Whether it’s a walk in the park, a hike in the bush, or simply being in your garden, getting out in nature allows you to disconnect from the busyness of life and reconnect with yourself.
Tip 3: Practise Mindful Waiting
We all have moments when we are waiting—whether it’s for a coffee, at the doctor’s office, for a meeting to start, or for the kettle to boil. Rather than reaching for your phone to check social media or the news, use these times to practise being still. Engage your senses: keep your mobile in your pocket or bag - what can you see, what layers of sound can you hear, what textures can you feel, what aromas are in the air? These are perfect opportunities to practise stillness and to be present in the moment.
Incorporating these five tips into your daily routine can help you cultivate stillness and find balance amidst the busyness of life. Remember, stillness is not about doing nothing; it’s about creating space for what truly matters.
