Understanding the powerhouses within our skin - the mighty mitochondria!
FRII[S]MITH’s core essence is to dive into the science of skincare, formulating products and researching safe but astonishingly effective ingredients that can give someone that bare skin confidence that we adore. One of our favourite things to do is simplify the science behind skincare so that you can understand exactly what you are putting on your skin. Which is why we are so excited to talk about the mighty mitochondria! Here we summarise what mitochondria are, what role they play and why we need to take care of them so that our skin is optimised to be healthy and radiant.
So, what actually are mitochondria and what do they do?
Mitochondria are often referred to as the "powerhouses" of cells because they generate energy that cells need to optimally function. This energy is crucial for many cellular processes, including those that keep your skin healthy. As we age, so too do the mitochondria in our cells. Simply put, the older mitochondria are not as efficient at producing energy as younger mitochondria. As a result of this, older skin produces less energy than what is necessary to keep your skin functioning at peak levels. For example, some of the processes that begin to break down are the production of new proteins and hyaluronic acid, reinforcement of the skin barrier and defending against bacteria. At FRII[S]MITH, we are continually researching what active ingredients impact our mitochondria so that we can work our magic and formulate products that ensure they remain young and continue to work hard for our skin!
Here’s how mitochondria benefit your skin:
- Energy Production. Mitochondria produce ATP (adenosine triphosphate), which provides energy for cellular functions. This energy is essential for the repair and regeneration of skin cells, as well as for maintaining overall skin health.
- Antioxidant Defense. Mitochondria help manage oxidative stress by producing antioxidants. They also help in neutralizing free radicals, which can damage skin cells and accelerate aging. This protective role is important for preventing premature skin aging and maintaining a youthful appearance.
- Collagen Synthesis. Collagen is a key structural protein in the skin that helps maintain its elasticity and firmness. Mitochondria support the cells in producing collagen by supplying the necessary energy and maintaining cellular health.
- Cellular Repair and Regeneration. Mitochondria are involved in cellular repair processes. Efficient mitochondria help skin cells recover from damage caused by environmental factors like UV radiation or pollution, aiding in quicker healing and rejuvenation.
- Regulating Apoptosis. Mitochondria play a role in regulating apoptosis, or programmed cell death. Proper regulation helps remove damaged or dysfunctional cells and supports the maintenance of healthy skin.
What can we do to take care of our mitochondria?
Whilst you can’t add to your mitochondria, there are plenty of things you can do to support mitochondrial function! These include:
1. Healthy Diet:
Antioxidant-Rich Foods: Consume foods high in antioxidants, such as berries, leafy greens, nuts, and seeds, to help combat oxidative stress.
Healthy Fats: Include sources of healthy fats, such as avocados, olive oil, and fatty fish (like salmon), which support mitochondrial membranes.
Adequate Protein: Ensure you’re getting enough protein, as amino acids are crucial for mitochondrial function and repair.
Complex Carbohydrates: Opt for whole grains and vegetables, which provide a steady source of energy and help avoid blood sugar spikes that can negatively affect mitochondria.
2. Regular Exercise:
Aerobic Exercise: Activities like running, swimming, or cycling enhance mitochondrial density and efficiency.
Strength Training: Weightlifting and resistance exercises also stimulate the creation of new mitochondria.
3. Adequate Sleep:
Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep per night. Sleep is crucial for cellular repair and maintenance, including the mitochondria.
4. Stress Management:
Chronic stress can harm mitochondrial function. Engage in stress-reducing activities like meditation, yoga, or deep-breathing exercises.
5. Avoid Toxins:
Limit exposure to environmental toxins, such as pollutants and chemicals, which can negatively affect mitochondrial health. Choose natural products when possible and ensure good ventilation in living spaces.
6. Stay Hydrated:
Proper hydration is vital for cellular function, including the mitochondria. Drink plenty of water throughout the day. We recommend 1-2 litres if you can.
7. Use skincare products with active ingredients:
Our I AM [VITALITY] active day serum is scientifically formulated to boost the mitochondrial energy within your cells and protect the skin from the external stressors we meet every day. We use nourishing ingredients like CoQ10 (an essential nutrient produced by our body), Vitamin C (to boost collagen) and resveratrol (a powerful antioxidant) to give you instant hydration, skin tightening and vitality.
8. Sunlight Exposure:
Moderate sun exposure helps regulate circadian rhythms, which are important for mitochondrial function. Just be sure to protect your skin from excessive UV damage. Our I AM [PROTECTED] tinted SPF moisturiser is hydrating, nourishing and antioxidant-rich, helping to even your skin tone and protect against external stressors. We use peptides for youth restoration, titanium dioxide for UV protection and niacinamide to lighten and brighten the skin. It’s the perfect middle ground between a BB cream and a nurturing skincare formula.
Healthy mitochondria contribute to the overall vitality of skin cells, promoting repair, regeneration, and protection against damage. That's why supporting mitochondrial health can have a positive impact on your skin's appearance and function. By integrating the above practices into your daily life and using our range of gentle, scientifically formulated FRII[S]MITH products, you can support and maintain healthy mitochondria, which in turn will benefit your overall health and well-being so you can carry on being incredible angels day in, day out.
